Saturated Ammonium Chloride Solution, Non-Sterile is an aqueous reagent containing ammonium chloride at its solubility limit under standard laboratory conditions. The solution provides consistent ammonium and chloride activities for procedures such as erythrocyte lysis in whole-blood processing, preparation of leukocyte suspensions prior to flow cytometry, calibration of chloride ion-selective electrodes, and precipitation reactions in analytical chemistry.

Supplied non-sterile for general laboratory use.

  • Saturated Ammonium Chloride
  • Organic Reaction Quench/Workup: Saturated Ammonium Chloride is used to quench and work up Grignard, organolithium, and metal hydride reactions, decomposing intermediates and aiding phase separation.

  • Ammonia–Ammonium Buffer Preparation: Combined with ammonium hydroxide to prepare ammonium buffer (pH ~9–10) for complexometric EDTA titrations, such as water hardness determinations.

  • Electrochemistry (Electrolyte/Salt Bridge): Serves as an electrolyte or salt bridge medium in teaching and research electrochemical cells.

  • Analytical Chemistry (Chloride Source): Provides chloride ions for precipitation and confirmatory tests (e.g., silver halide formation) and ionic strength adjustment.

  • RBC Lysis Buffer Preparation: Diluted from Saturated Ammonium Chloride to make erythrocyte lysis solutions for leukocyte isolation from whole blood.

  • Fixative Quenching in Microscopy: After dilution, used to quench free aldehydes following paraformaldehyde fixation to reduce background fluorescence.

  • General Neutralization/Workup: Employed to neutralize basic reaction mixtures and convert reactive species to water-soluble ammonium salts during sample cleanup.
