Agar, Molecular Biology Grade is a purified polysaccharide used to solidify aqueous media for microbiological and molecular biology workflows. It produces thermo-reversible gels that withstand standard incubation conditions and remain stable during routine handling.

This grade of agar is suitable for preparing plates and solid media for work with laboratory strains of bacteria and yeast, including recombinant E. coli, and can be sterilized together with media by autoclaving. It is compatible with commonly used formulations such as LB, 2xYT, SOC, and minimal media when a solid support is required.

  • Solidifying culture media: Preparation of LB, TB, and other agar plates for routine plating and isolation of Escherichia coli and other bacteria.

  • Selective and differential media: Antibiotic plates, MacConkey, and X‑gal/IPTG blue‑white screening for cloning and selection.

  • Colony isolation and maintenance: Streaking, patching, and stab cultures for bacterial and yeast strains.

  • CFU enumeration: Plate counts for microbial quantification in research, environmental, and QC workflows.

  • Soft/top agar overlays: Motility assays and bacteriophage plaque assays using hosts such as Escherichia coli or Salmonella.

  • Replica plating: Transfer of colonies to assess genetic markers, auxotrophies, and selections.

  • Antibiotic susceptibility testing: Mueller–Hinton and related agar plates for disk diffusion assays.

  • Yeast and fungal culture: Solid media for growth and genetic manipulation of yeasts and filamentous fungi.

  • C. elegans culture: NGM agar plates seeded with Escherichia coli (e.g., OP50) for nematode maintenance.

  • Plant tissue culture: Solidification of MS and other plant media for explants and seed germination.
